October Insider
Welcome to our harvest-time Insider. As you saw on last month’s desktop background, the rich red of the Ocean Spray cranberry harvest is truly something to behold. But busy as we are with this year’s berries, we’ve still found time to put the finishing touch to our new look Ocean Spray range with the sauce (it’s always been a delicious finishing touch).

There’s a real Ocean Spray presence in store now, making it easy to find your favourite cranberry goodness. And talking of favourites, this month try one of ours - a super-indulgent Smoothie Ice Cream that’s sure to chill and thrill your tastebuds. You can’t beat a Smoothie start to the harvest!

The Growers of Ocean Spray
Top cookery author Diana Henry has created the following delicious recipe for a simple yet truly adult and indulgent cranberry ice cream, using our brand new Smoothies range. Check out her latest publication, ‘The Gastropub Cookbook – Another Helping’ for even more inspiration.

Diana‘s a big fan of our new Smoothies range. Here's what she had to say about them :

“Most smoothies I find too sweet but these are smoothies for grown-ups. They’re 100% pure fruit which is unusual in a smoothie and each 250ml serving counts as 1 of your 5 a day so perfect for breakfast, with lunch or as a healthy snack alternative between meals.

“Because of their vibrant flavours I’ve been using them as a base for other drinks. My kids have been enjoying milk shakes made with them and I’ve also added them to bio yoghurt. Even more delicious I’ve used these smoothies as a base to make both yoghurt and a cream based ice-cream.”

CRANBERRY AND YOGHURT ICE CREAM

Serves 6-8
400ml Ocean Spray Grower’s Reserve Cranberry Smoothie
200g Greek yoghurt
70g caster sugar

In a large jug mix the Smoothie with the yoghurt and caster sugar until it is well blended. Pour into an ice-cream machine and churn till firm. Scoop into plastic boxes, cover and put into the freezer.

New research just published suggests that cranberry juice can be as effective as probiotics in maintaining good digestive health. The double-blind trial at the University of Chile found a regular 200ml serving of 25% cranberry juice was as effective as the probiotic studied in suppressing growth of H. pylori among asymptomatic children. The study also showed the potential for an increased benefit when cranberry and probiotics are combined.

“This research is exciting as antibiotics are currently the only effective treatment for H. pylori, the most common cause of stomach ulcers worldwide and a risk factor for gastric cancers,” says Dr. Fritz Francois, Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. “Using cranberry juice and probiotics to possibly suppress growth of H. pylori is great news for physicians and patients who are seeking natural alternatives to antibiotics.”

Lucky Nikki Croney and her family recently enjoyed a fabulous New England break courtesy of the Ocean Spray and America As You Like It offer from earlier this year. She emailed us at The Insider to share her thoughts on the holiday:

“We would just like to say a HUGE thank you to Ocean Spray,on behalf of the Croney family. We had a fabulous time in New England. Everything really lived up to our expectations, and it proved to be a truly beautiful part of the world.”
You’ve probably enjoyed a straight Cranberry Classic and vodka over ice before - but have you tried blending with the blends? Cranberry & Blueberry makes a great mixer with gin or vodka and is perfect addition to a party punchbowl.
