Healthy lifestyle tips for the new year

You might be extra keen to work on some changes, as it's the beginning of not only a new year, but a new decade! We’ve got some top lifestyle tips to help you get started.

Fitness

It's a gym manager's favourite time of year, but here are some tips to help you stay on track with your resolutions even if you're not at the gym.

  • Exercise with a partner, two or three times per week, walk, jog, skate, cycle, etc.
  • Sign up for some personal training sessions to start the New Year
  • Use the stairs instead of lifts or park at the far end of the car park if possible.
  • Breathe. Take full abdominal breaths several times during the day.

Nutrition

Making a few changes to your diet can make all the difference towards healthier eating.

  • Write a simple nutrition resolution to which you can commit. Why not try to drink 250ml of Cranberry Classic a day, as a step towards keeping harmful bacteria at bay.
  • Put distractions such as newspapers, books, and mobile phones aside and take time to eat.
  • Try not to eat late at night, leaving a minimum of two hours before sleeping.
  • Enjoy many types of foods, but in moderation. Experiment at mealtimes by add-ing cranberry sauce or Craisins to sweet or savoury dishes. For inspiration, view our recipes.

Stress management

Trying to juggle a busy diary can catch up to even the best of us, so ease the stress with these simple tips.

  • Keep your life simple by organising a messy room or garage
  • Book in for that massage you’ve been promising yourself
  • Don’t just mindlessly turn the TV on every night. Turn it off and listen to music or try a crossword and get your brain engaged in something different.
  • Control your schedule and make time for reflection and relaxation

General wellbeing

Keep a healthy social schedule too and reap the rewards.

  • Volunteer in your community, at a shelter or
  • Invite a neighbour that lives alone to dinner
  • Remember to have fun – play fun games, enjoy your children
  • Plan comedy nights with family, friends, or colleagues
